PhantomAlert Data Base Card

GPS Radar Detector or PhantomAlert Data Base Card: Which to choose

PhantomAlert Data Base Card

For those of you considering the purchase of a radar laser detector or a regular radar detector but really want to know where those Red Light Cameras, Speed Traps or Radar Cameras are, consider purchasing a PhantomAlert Data Base card instead.

I have spent the last four months reviewing the effectiveness of the PhantomAlert on my Garmin Nuvi GPS 660. I have come to the conclusion that if you don’t want to shell out the $450 to $500 needed to purchase a first rate GPS Radar Detector then the PhantomAlert annual card is your best bet to mate with your GPS and radar detector. Actually, you really won’t need a radar detector with the PhantomAlert. The only thing that I caution you on is that you make sure that the PhantomAlert Data Base is compatible with you GPS unit.

The PhantomAlert works with most all Garmin Nuvi GPS units. It’s the Magellan and TomTom GPS units that you will need to be sure of compatibility of the PhantomAlert with. Do your homework, install it properly and keep it up to date and you really can get by without a GPS Radar Detector. Always remember though nothing is 100%. Drive safely!

GPS Refurbished or New – That’s the Question

February 7th, 2010

Garmin Nuvi GPS 5000 Refurbished

This past Holiday season I saw the most refurbished GPS units for sale that I had seen all year.It was all brands too, Garmin Nuvi GPS, Magellan and TomTom. It makes you wonder where did all the refurbished units come from?

First, let’s determine what makes a unit refurbished. It’s really very simple. Refurbished units are units that did not make it through the assembly process or they were returned by the customer for some problem. Hence, the manufacturer takes the unit and fixes what ever was wrong with it and now has to sell it as refurbished. They can not sell them as first quality because they have had a defect of some sort.

When purchasing a refurbished unit make sure that you get a unit with a good warranty. Garmin GPS give new warranty with their refurb units. Also, make sure that there is enough of a price differential to warrant the refurb purchase. You may be able to spend a few more bucks and buy new. Shop around and make sure the refurb is a good deal.

Being a good shopper and having a little patience while shopping for a Global Positioning System, you can really save some cash. However, do your homework.

Setup Your Free User Account for Your GPS

October 7th, 2009

After you have purchased your GPS, go to the manufacturer’s web site and set up your free user account. This will allow you to receive and load on your GPS any firmware or map updates. Most manufacturers allow free mBestGPS Mo logoap updates for the first six months after you register your GPS. This is very important as Garmin recently had a firmware issue with their 8XX and 7XX series Garmin Nuvi GPS. If you didn’t upload the firmware update from Garmin, there was a good chance that your Garmin Nuvi GPS would not have found the satellites. From then on as far as the map updates are concerned, you usually have to pay for the map updates after the initial six months or so. I recommend that if your budget allows you purchase a life time map update option. This allows you to update the map on your GPS unit any time there is an update for your model of personal navigation device. With all the growth in the country these days, a map update is highly recommended. There is nothing more frustrating than putting an address in your GPS, and it not being found. These Life Time updates cost anywhere from $100 to $200. That’s a far-site better than what some foreign car makers charge for their built in navigation systems. These can cost in the range of what a good stand alone GPS unit would cost. A friend of mine paid the dealer $375 for the navigation system map update for his foreign made SUV. One other use for that USB cable that came with your GPS is to purchase a data base that contains known law enforcement locations in your area. This also makes your GPS a quasi-radar detector a GPS radar detector so to speak. PhantomAlert has a data base you can subscribe to that keeps up to date on known law enforcement locations across the United States and Canada. It’s available for Gamin Nuvi GPS and other models as well as TomTom and most Magellan units. You can try it on other makes, but they don’t guarantee it. If you purchase one, download it regularly. It changes every day. PhantomAlert relies on its users to keep the data base up to date by report law enforcement locations that are not in the data base.

GPS Must Have’s – Part 2

September 24th, 2009

One of the very essential accessories a Garmin Nuvi GPS owner should purchase preferably at the same time that the global positioning system GPS unit is purchased is the protective shield for the display. These are nothing more than thin pieces of transparent plastic that can be seen through but provide a much needed service to the best Garmin GPS. It keeps the display from becoming scratched either while in use or stored. The protective display shields can be purchased in packages of usually three pieces per pack. This should last the life of your personal navigation device. These should be used on the best GPS handhelds too. Along with the original purchase of your GPS regardless of what make Garmin Nuvi GPS, Magellan or TomTom, it is highly recommended that a
stylus be purchased to use on everyday selection of options displaying on your portable GPS system screen. This too will keep your display screen from being damaged if for example your fingers had a grain of sand on them. The stylus also makes selection and option buttons function better. You will not “fat finger” your selection and pick the wrong option. Some GPS manufacturers include a stylus but most do not. Buy several. They get lost easily.

Garmin Annouces Firmware Update for Certain GPS Units

July 10th, 2009

On June 24, 2009, Garmin announced a mandatory firmware update for certain Garmin Nuvi GPS units. The affect Garmin Nuvi GPS units are 7X5 series, 800 series, 850 series, Zumo 660, GPSMAP 620 and GPSMAP 640. Owners of these units need to go to http://www.Garmin.com/support and update their firmware by downloading the latest update.

It seems that the worst affected are the Garmin Nuvi GPS 7X5 series. These units are not powering up or not acquiring the satellite signals. GPS — How Was It Developed?

July 4th, 2009

GRM0054300GPS Navigation Systems technology was originally developed by the United States Department of Defense and was meant for military use to keep track of enemies and know their position at all times. Tracking technology has been around for quite some time actually – since World War II to be exact.

Navigator GPS design is based partly on ground-based radio navigation systems developed in the early 1940’s that were used in World War II. These systems were named LORAN and Decca Navigator and were focused on knowing where the enemy was so they could either attack or retreat depending on the size of the forces.

Additional inspiration for modern day GPS systems and GPS handhelds came when Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. A team of scientists monitored Sputnik’s radio transmissions and discovered that because of the Doppler Effect, the frequency of the signal being transmitted was high as the satellite approached and lower as it moved away. The Doppler Effect is the change in frequency and wave length of a wave as it is perceived by an observer moving relative to the source of the waves.

This team of scientists that was observing Sputnik’s radio transmissions soon realized that since they knew their exact location on the globe, they could pin point where the satellite was along its orbit by measuring the Doppler distortion. This was groundbreaking and very exciting for the military at the time. This technology is used in radar laser detectors too.

The United States Navy used the first satellite navigation system called Transit. It was first successfully test in 1960 and was quite mind-boggling for everyone in the military. When the Navy tested Transit, they did so hoping for some quite specific results. Using a constellation of five satellites, they found that the system could provide a navigational fix approximately once per hour. Today’s GPS navigation systems like the Garmin Nuvi GPS use as many as twelve satellites to lock on for instant positioning fixes.

In 1967, the Navy developed the Timation satellite which proved the ability to place accurate clocks in space. This is a technology that the GPS navigation system relies on. In the 1970’s, the ground-based Omega Navigation System, based on signal phase comparison, became the first world-wide radio navigation system. This was the foundation and building block of today’s GPS Portables.

In February of 1978, the first experimental Block-I GPS satellite was launched into space and the development of modern-day GPS systems began. These original satellites were initially made by Rockwell International. Now, the satellites we use for GPS are manufactured by Lockheed Martin.

In 1983, Soviet interceptor aircraft shot down a civilian airliner flight KAL 007 as it flew in restricted Soviet airspace. This heinous act killed all 269 people on board – all of whom were civilians. Shortly thereafter, President Ronald Reagan announced that the GPS system would be made available for civilian use once it was completed. Because of this horrible act on the part of the Soviets, developed of the GPS navigation system was stepped up more than it ever had been before and experimentations began in earnest.

By 1985, ten more experimental Block-I satellites had been launched into space to validate the concept of GPS and in 1989; the first modern Block-II satellite was launched. By December of 1993, the GPS system achieve initial operational capability and just a month later, a complete constellation of 24 satellites were in orbit with full operational capability declared by NAVSTAR in April of 1995.

A year after that, President Bill Clinton realized the importance of GPS to civilian users as well as military users which prompted him to issue a policy directive that declared GPS to be a dual-use system meaning civilian as well as military. He established an Interagency GPS Executive Board that was responsible for managing GPS as an asset of the United States. With this came the commercial brands such as Garmin Nuvi GPS.

Plans began in earnest to improve upon the system for the everyday user of the navigation system. An announcement was made that the government was going to upgrade the GPS system with two new civilian signals that would lead towards enhanced user accuracy and reliability particularly with respect to aviation safety. Also, GPS handhelds would be made.

Since those early years, the GPS technology has evolved into something that the everyday public uses and uses with amazing accuracy and reliability. What began as a way to keep track of our enemies is now used to help guide us along the way during trips and excursions. Such companies as TomTom, Magellan and Garmin Nuvi GPS have made a business out of this.

In fact, the GPS system we have today has many applications including map making, land surveying, and commerce uses. Plus, because of the way a GPS can pinpoint times with amazing accuracy, scientists are able to use it in many applications including the study of earthquakes and the synchronization of telecommunications networks. Who knew that golfers would be able to use a GPS handheld to determine the distance to the flag.

New uses for GPS systems are constantly being discovered and the way that technology is always evolving, we are sure that even more new uses will come about for the GPS systems. They will probably always be finding new uses too as the system is constantly improved upon. Next time your on the highway, safely look over at the car next to you and see if it might contain a Garmin Nuvi GPS.
